WASH Programme for Artisan community of India

This Project was supported by WaterAid India. WASH in Schools is a part of our core interventions for integrated approach to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene, with a key focus on institutions and households.

Our approach primarily includes –

Creating child friendly and inclusive facilities for children in terms of clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.

Proper maintenance of 150 handpumps

Engaging with students and communities who are a part of WASH project.

Initiate hygiene and behaviour change with a key focus on menstrual hygiene management.

Engagement and technical support to education department on capacity building, hygiene promotion and inclusion of WASH indicators.

Around 1 lakh beneficiaries were impacted under this project.

The project aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Facilitate access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for artisan communities, enabling them to develop new skills that generate income, improve health, and enhance livelihood opportunities.
  • Support schools attended by children of artisan workers by providing improved WASH facilities and education, promoting healthier habits, longer school attendance, and brighter futures for students.

The project is a collaboration between the John Lewis Foundation and Water Aid India. The expected outcomes are as follows:

  • 10,000 women and men will practice handwashing with soap before meals and after using the toilet.
  • 50,000 people trained in waste management will benefit from a new source of income. 10,000 women will report increased knowledge of good menstrual hygiene management behaviours.
  • 10,000 women will report increased knowledge of good menstrual hygiene management behaviours.
  • 1,000 students will practice good hygiene behaviours.
  • 750 girls will report increased knowledge of menstrual hygiene practices.
